You might not recognize his name, but i’m positive you’d instantly recognize his production. Rick Ross- 600 Benz? That’s him. Llyod Banks- Start It Up? That’s him. Young Chris entire Revival mixtape? Yep that was also Cardiak. This New Jersey producer is a great example of how perseverance and talent can open up the doors that will lead to your dreams. After the jump you can read my interview with Cardiak discussing multiple topics that range from, how his collaboration with Young Chris happened, producing at age 14, and much more. Be sure to visit his website, and follow his twitter to stay up to date with him. Also S/O to Velv for making this happen.
Yoh: First off i want to welcome Cardiak to TheTapeDeck. For our readers unfamiliar with you can we get a small introduction?
Cardiak: I’m a Producer, I go by the name of Cardiak… I’m new to the industry, but I plan to be around for a while. I love music.
Yoh: One thing i’ve noticed about your production is the fact you rarely have beats that sound alike. Diversity is a great thing but do you ever worry about not having an distinct sound? 600benz and The Rise were two beats you had on the MMG collaboration album and they might as well been ying and yang.
Cardiak: Well, I do feel like I have my own sound, but as time goes on and people hear more of my music they will understand my sound more, but diversity is what makes my sound dope… I can make beats for any artist, not just rap. I go off of feelings rather than what’s trendy… but I can get trendy if need be.
Yoh: You are most known for producing Start It Up(Lloyd Banks featuring Swizz Beatz, Kanye West, Ryan Leslie & Fabolous). When you sent Llyod the beat did you expect such an all star cast and what was your first reaction when you saw the line up?
Cardiak: I was always a big fan of banks so I knew he was going to make something dope, but when he told me who he had on it I was hype…. at first 50 was on the hook and it only had 2 verses, but a week later they hit me up told me the final line up…. I knew it was on after that.
Yoh: You and Young Chris did an entire mixtape together entitled The Revival. Reviews have been pretty positive from what I’ve seen. How did you two end up linking up and was it difficult producing your first project for a single artist?
Cardiak: I was reaching out to my boy Waynoo (Young Chris’ A&R) and I linked him wit my man Tdot, I was just looking to send a few joints to Chris. Later that week, Tdot came to me and said him and Waynoo had a plan and the rest was history. As far as Chris, he’s a cool dude, I was always a fan of him growing up, so the project was easy.
Yoh: If you had to pick 3 artist to produce an entire project for who and why?
Cardiak: Jay-Z, Lady Gaga and Ross. I think it would shock people and I think it would be big for music. I respect all three of these people as artist…It would definitely feature Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Nas and a few others also.
Yoh: You are a judge for iStandard Proudcers showcase if i’m correct? You also won many awards before actually getting the judging job. With that said any up and coming producers that you are feeling at the moment?
Cardiak: I like Beat Bully and Jahlil, we’re all up and coming still, we all have talent and a bright future. Me personally…I feel like I’m just getting my feet wet, 2011 was fast paced, I was thrown into a lot of big situations head 1st, but I’m a little more use to the way the industry works now and ready to go ham.
Yoh: Since you been producing since the age of 14 did you always consider this your first career choice. If you weren’t pursing a life of late night fruity loop sessions what would Cardiak be doing?
Cardiak: If I wasn’t making beats I would be in school, I don’t even know what for, but its scary to even think about it.
Yoh: Zombie Apolocpyse or Alien Invasion? Which would you have a better chance of survivig!? Lol seriously Plenty rumors surround this year. Not saying they are true but if any of these predictions come true what is one thing you would regret you didn’t get a chance to do?
Cardiak: Alien invasion I guess…lol. Zombies don’t ever quit…if the world ends this year I don’t regret anything, but a Grammy would have been nice… but we gone be here…God is good and we are blessed.
Yoh: What does success mean to Cardiak?
Cardiak: Success means that everyone around me has heaven on earth, everything they want and need…all the luxuries of hard earned legal money from music. My family happy, stable and free.
