#TheTapeDeck Meets Jonathan Lowell

Esther Baxter Lowell

Jonathan Lowell name probably looks familar since he produced the entire #BeCool mixtape with fellow TUS rapper Chuuwee, which has been making it’s way all across the blogs/web.18 years old, Hailing from Boston Massachusetts , Jonathan produced for alot of upcoming talents that consist of D-Lain,Brandun Deshay,Xavi The Backpacker, and Kaine Karrera to name a few. In our interview we discuss the background of his name, his upcoming 50 track instrumental album “Pride And Joy”,Edelritters, his influences, and much much much. Since Jonathan didn’t have any pictures for the interview it’s filled with some of his top sexist women. Enjoy.

Yoh: First off i want to welcome Jonathan Lowell to TheTapeDeck. For our readers unfamiliar with you and your music can we get a little introduction?

Jonathan Lowell: Well, I’m a producer/emcee from Boston, MA, soon to be relocating to California. Most of my work is sample-based. I have a project out with Chuuwee called Be Cool and another recent entitled Trapped In The Box with Denver artist Kaine Karrera. My work is dope. That’s all I can really say, along with “Take my word for it”.

Yoh: Glad you mentioned Be Cool,a pretty big project for both you and Chuuwee. Since the release of BeCool has the number of artist reaching out for beats increased?

Jonathan Lowell: I’m glad you asked. Yes. Which is both a good and bad thing. Bad because well….there’s dope AND wack rappers out there. So I’m sure I don’t need to say there’s more wack rappers than good ones. That’s a given. The good part is. Well. The people who’ve been reaching out. Marz Lovejoy, Planet Asia & ScienZe to name a few.

Maliah Michel Lowell

Yoh: Planet Asia is most def a good look. You mention moving to California. Coming from Boston,do you think such a move will effect your music.Cali’s hip-hop scene is looking great right now.

Jonathan Lowell: I think it won’t really affect anything other than my output & work ethic. A lot of the artists I work with, my personal team Edelritters excluded, happen to live in California. Chuuwee, Keno, J. Good, Mean Doe Green, Xavi, my homie Symptom, Phil The Agony, Like, Ghrimm, a lot of cool people I wanna meet out there and build with, man.

Shay Laren Lowell

Yoh: So what can you tell the people about this project you have in the works entitled “Sheepscapes”

Jonathan Lowell: Ohh. Well. Actually, the project I have coming out is a re-hash of Sheepscapes. With the addition onto the title, The Vincent Brooks Story. It’s going to have a wide range of features. I can’t speak too much on it though, since I put it on hold for Pride & Joy and for the first Edelritters featured project.

Yoh: Edelritters is the group you’ve been putting together if im not mistaken. Whats the meaning behind the name and what can we expect from the Pride & Joy project?

Megan Good Lowell

Jonathan Lowell: Noble Knights. I’m trying to assemble an order of knights. I already have some heavy hitters recruited. And Pride And Joy is a 50 track instrumental album. ALL new stuff. It will definitely be something amazing. I was thinking about throwing some vocal joints in but it would kill the flow of the project….so I’ll just keep it all instrumental.

Yoh: 50 tracks!? Why so many?

Jonathan Lowell: Because I’m taking people on a soundscape with this one. That and with all those beats, I can point to that project and that way, I can focus on my group & TUS.

Yoh: One thing many people  don’t know about the mysterious Jonathan Lowell is that you’re a producer/emcee. Since you are starting to make a name for yourself as a producer are you worried about releasing music of you rapping?

Beyonce Lowell

Jonathan Lowell: Oh, not at all. I started out as a rapper so I’m not tripping. I’m actually more competent in that field than production. At least that’s how I feel.

Yoh: So if you had to break it down who would you say inspire your style in rapping and your style of production?

Jonathan Lowell: Style in rapping, Ice Cube & Kurupt. Kurupt cause I’ve always felt dude was a great artist and had a cool ass way of rapping. lol. And Ice Cube cause he’s that dude. Even though he’s doing kids movies now. If I met dude, I would definitely love to work with him. I could bring back the Ice Cube niggas loved in the 90s. As far as influences for producers, J Dilla. But I’m going to give you a different reason than most. “Aw, he’s the best ever”. “Aw, he’s really dope!!!!! And got ill beats!” Nah. I’m saying he’s my influence because he created music. Not beats. He was the Picasso of hip hop. Could paint the most vivid pictures, and you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who could paint that same picture without direction from the man himself.

Yoh: I dig that. Something that surprised me is the fact your government name isn’t Jonathan Lowell. You don’t have to put it out there(you might have felonies and i don’t need the cops storming thetape) but whats the back story of your name?

Gabrielle Union Lowell

Jonathan Lowell: I started out as Johnny Storm. Then I started to think. “Eh. This is cliche” as my work started to progress. And I started to become a weirdo. So I thought to myself “I want to keep a F4 related name…but not a direct ripoff..” Jonathan Lowell are the first two names in Johnny Storm’s full name. So I just used that.

Yoh: Pretty creative. I wanna go back to BeCool for a second. Before that project you dropped alot of different small instrumental projects, alot people probably don’t have How did you feel about your place in music then and how do you feel about it since Be Cool.

Jonathan Lowell: My place is the same. People still sleep on my shit whenever I drop something. The only difference is people tell me “Good job” whenever Chuuwee drops a track over one of my beats. But I’m doing a lot of things behind the scenes to change that. Also the reason I started a team. So I can use my skills to the fullest extent. Chuuwee is the homie, but I feel like I need to break out of the French Inhale/CheZ Chit shadow. I’m not trying to be in a box. I’ve always been opposed to that.

Yoh: I can understand that. Speaking of Chez Chit the video just dropped and i see you had a small cameo in it. How did it feel to be apart of the video & meeting chuuwee for the first time?

Jonathan Lowell:It was dope. And Chuuwee’s a real cool dude. Wouldn’t mind hanging out with dude again, that’s the homie. Still kinda hyped I met Statik Selektah when out in New York. Got to witness the recording of Half Moon.

Yoh: Just a few more questions and we are done here sir.
1. Anyone that follows you via twitter can tell your a big Wu-Tang fan. So if you had a dream collaboration with any Wu-tang artist(pick as many as you want) who would you produce for and who would you rap along with?
2. Your pretty passionate about hip-hop and the overall culture that surrounds it. Do you remember when you were first introduced to the genre? Or the first hip-hop CD you heard and you just fell in love with?
3. 5 years from now where do you see yourself within the music industry
4. If you weren’t pursing a career in music what would Jonathan Lowell be doing with music.
5. What does success mean to you?

Jonathan Lowell: 1. Well…I’ll be working with Masta Killa, so I can cross him off the list. lol. GHOSTFACE THOUGH. That’s the one person I would work with out of ALL rappers. Nahmean.
2. First CD. Black On Both Sides. I loved the way it sounded. Went further back. Even went through a phase where I bought a Trick Daddy album and a Dem Franchize Boyz, but who hasn’t, right!? I was kind of disappointed to hear they broke up, not gonna lie.
3. Where 9th Wonder is. Where Jamla is, that’s how my crew will be. I want that. I want a team I can be proud of. And I want a reputation & background I can be proud of. That’s what I’ll have in 5 years. Shit. I have that now, as a matter of fact. But you get what I’m saying. lol
4. I’d be working a dead end job. BUT. I’d still be in high school right now.
5. Success means accomplishing your dreams. Succeeding is just completion of a task, in actuality. So that’s how I look at it.

Yoh: Everyone that has ever rocked a white tee has a copy of the first Dem Franchize Boyz Album lol. Well i want to thank you sir it’s been a honor. All i need now is where people can hear your music, social network links, and any shout outs you might have.

Jonathan Lowell: Shout-out to my team, Edelritters. Which consists of Jordan Edwards, N8ter, Naites, RH The Nightmare & someone else I’m trying to get into the group, KaoVanny. All very talented people. Shout-out to the team TUS. You can hear my music at soundcloud.com/jonathanlowell or jonathanlowell.bandcamp.com. My Twitter is @JonathanLowell and that’s pretty much it! It’s been a pleasure, fam!
