#TheTapeDeck Meets Dom O Briggs

Dom O Briggs

What do you get when you combine a love for art,the ability to manipulate words over dope production, and a cannabis loving Gemini? If you answered “Who is Dom O Briggs” then pat yourself on the back.  This life loving lyricist isn’t your typical artist,if you just take a minute to check out his latest mixtape A Gemini’s Tale the music will speak for itself. I recently got a chance to interview him in which we discussed the mixtape, his biggest inspirations, being considered a lyrcisit over being lyrical, and much much much more. You can read the interview in it’s entirety after the jump. Enjoy.

Yoh:First off i want to welcome you to TheTapeDeck. For our readers unfamiliar with you give us a little introduction.

Dom O Briggs:My name is Dom O Briggs. I’m 20 years old. Imma Gemini. I love weed life and art. My favorite cereal is Frosted Flakes, I make good sanwiches and I work at Forever 21.

Yoh: Seems to be the typical 20 year old,but what you failed to mention is that you make pretty dope hip-hop music. How long have you been a recording artist?

Dom O Briggs:Im decent.Hahaha.I’ve been making music since 2006.I’m a poet too though.

Yoh:Ah i think it’s a few references in your latest project “A Gemini’s Tale” about you being a poet. When it comes to writing raps & writing poetry what’s the biggest difference?

Dom O Briggs:Ummm. I’d say that writing a poem gives you way more freedom as a writer, but making music is something kinda spiritual to me.

A Gemini's Tale

Yoh:Word. Since i already brought up A Gemini’s Tale what can you tell us about the tape, and why do you feel it’s a must download or stream?

Dom O Briggs: I feel that its damn good. Lyrically, I feel that its an inch above some other rappers. No names though. Plus, I do it because I love it. And its kinda crack. Just sayin…The whole project is above me living and going thru shit. People can relate.

Yoh: Relatable music will always go far especially in such a facade industry. Any particular song on the tape that you would consider your favorite or a sure stand out?

Dom O Briggs:I suggest people listen to the whole project. Its about a bunch of different things that I went through since I dropped “The Sounds of Music”. That was the project before A Gemini’s Tale. Its about life. Its me telling people that I understand. I just wanna connect with the people really.

Yoh:So would you consider A Gemini’s Tale a more mature, evolved form of The Sounds of Music or are they two different entities?

Dom O Briggs:yup. The song “Clearing My Head” can show that.

Yoh:”Clearing My Head” is pretty deep as far as the subject matters goes. What influenced you to write that song? You most def didn’t bite your tongue about certain issues.

Dom O Briggs:Yeah. I wrote that song at a confusing point in life for me. I stopped and just thought about everything. It was way more but i choosed not to use it. It got REAL. Hahaha

Yoh:Cmon man you gotta release it… On a scale from 1 to Rick Ross how real we talking?

Dom O Briggs:Lmfao! Baswe.Nah, Its was just about the government and their plots to keep us scared and how people feed into it.

Yoh:Regardless if people agree or not you do have some very valid points and i salute you for speaking your mind on such a hushed hushed subject. Another song that i found interesting was “Play It,Post It. You talk about being a little bitter about shows, blog post, ect. Since A Gemini Tale dropped is this still a problem you run into?

Dom O Briggs:Not as much as before. My fall is looking decent. People are actually realizing that I have talent and some people actually diggin my music. That’s all I need. I’d say people are still sleeping though. Lol.

Yoh:You recently released the video for the Better Than You track. Whats the concept behind it?

Dom O Briggs:The song is about me proving to myself that I’m an dope lyricist

Yoh: Lyricist is a word used alot in hip-hop. Do you feel it’s important to be known as a lyricist rather than people just consider you as being lyrical. A good example is Wale. Plenty debate if he’s a actual lyricist or just lyrical on certain records.

Dom O Briggs:I feel that thats the only box anyone can really put me in. I love words. I love to play with words. I love to make people think. To be “lyrical” is to be like Ray J.I think the title of lyricist is earned.

Yoh:How you gonna take a shot at a dude that got a gang of homo thugs on speed dial?

Dom O Briggs:This nigga said He let him drop his top though. I don’t let no niggas drop my top. Tats gay.

Yoh:Flatlines. Anyway i got a few more questions and it’s a wrap.
1. With A Gemini Tale still getting around blogs sites and such, are you already preparing your next project,or are you gonna take your time with it?
2.Who would you say is your biggest inspiration to continue doing music and why?
3. Your manager Cris is who put me on to your music. How did you two end up working together?
4. What does success mean to Dom O Briggs?

Dom O Briggs:A new project has been in the works for a while. Me and my homegirl Lotia Jazz are working on a project. She sung on a couple joints on A Gemini’s Tale. I’m going to her school to record that.My next solo project is coming out next year. I want AGT to circulate some more. I don’t want it to be overlooked likeThe Sounds of Music was.

2.Ok. I’m high. Bare with me. Doobie is done….My biggest inspiration is life. The fact that im living is the reason why I won’t ever stop doing music. I love music. Nothing else can make you feel the way that music can. I’m inspired by the voiceless There are people who don’t have a chance to be heard. Not even in music but in life. Not everyone can express their emotions the way and artist can. Artists inspire me. Being an artist is a huge responsibility.I’m also inspired by family. If it wasn’t for family, I wouldn’t be alive. I could be in jail right now for something crazy but I’m not. That’s because I was raised with good sense and my family held me down. The love that my family has for me is an inspiration.

3.That nigga is a fool.Lmao.I met him through the homies at BarrelHouse and my homegirl Diamond aka Big Sexy. Over twitter or something. I had a interview at DealWithNoDeal and I met him in person and one of my best friends Aaron knew him. We chopped it up and he was cool. Been my dude since.

4. Success means the opposite of failure. As long as I don’t fail, imma be ok. I might not be successful in the public’s eye. Know knows? I just gotta keep living and learning to see what happens. As long as I can blaze my finest cheeba, live and make art whether it be music, poetry, acting, drawing, dancing, or whatever because I love it and people connect, im good.

Yoh: I dig. With that we are done here sir. All i need is a link to your music, where people can reach you and any shout out’s you might have. Best of luck with all endeavors and you are always welcome to the tapedeck.
