Above you see a portion of my interview with up & coming rap group Self-Explanatory from Atlanta GA. We discuss their love for hiphop, video games, anime, future projects, and much much more. You can check out the interview in it’s entirety after the jump.

Yoh:How you guys doing today? First off want to thank you for the chance to interview. For the people that’s unfamiliar with Self-Explanatory give us a little introduction?

B.Ry: Well for starters im Bryan Tiller better known as B.Ry, beat maker and lyricist extrodinare
Simba: Im Marcus Black better known as MB, Simba or fatboy mac either or i respond to Lol but me and B.ry make up Selfexplantory or NES for short.

Yoh:Haha how did you two not only meet but come up with the groups name?

B.RY

B.Ry: How did we meet? Marcus Stole my bitch. And we been cool ever since. *Straight Face*
Simba: well yeah it happen like that for the most part we was section leaders on the drumline had some chick issues, shot the one in alabama and worked it out afterwards he been my bro ever since. straight like that.
B.Ry: as for the name, New Era came from the love of fitted caps that we both shared. Recently we adopted the name NES which stands for….
Simba: New Era Selfexplanatory, New Era Set, Niggaz Eatin Sushi, Never ending sexbot, Nintendo entertainment system, New Era Swag, Ninjas everyday swaggin, all that.

Yoh:This might be the best “how we met” stories ever haha. As far as hip-hop goes when did you guys really fall in love with the culture? And at what point did you know it’s something you wanted to pursue?

Simba

B.Ry: Me personally, i used to listen to old Criss Cross and Cool Mo D tracks as a kid all the time, but my love of hip hop began with Outkast’s “Stankonia” album. Ever since then, it was a must to keep up with dope music that may not be main stream. It wasnt until 8th grade when my brother taught me how to make beats that i actually thought about getting into DOING music. And even then i didnt start rapping til 11th grade just to do somin wit my friends when they found out i knew how to make beats. Eh.
Simba: I had been doing music ever since i was a child weather it was listening to the isley brothers, outkast, or Dr.Dre with my pops or blastin whatever was hot at the time with my older brother peter who actually got me started writing, hes a producer and always wanted me to write songs with him so as i grew older and he saw that i actually had some talent for hip hop he pushed me forward to pursue becoming a artist and its been work ever since.

Yoh:Seeing you both grew up on outkast, and being from atlanta, what do you feel about your music that’s gonna make you stand out? Artist are coming out in Atlanta everyday so it’s a must not to be caught in the tornado of rappers.

B.Ry: Honestly i write about what i like and what i know. If u listen to a beat of mine, i could sample an anime show, but the beat would still have the drum pattern you could find in a Lex Luger beat. Its all about preference of the people. I hope for everyone to respect our craft, if not hey, im sure there’s a new Flocka tape coming out.
Simba: pretty much i side with b.ry on it its different strokes for different folks i know alot of rappers locally down here that rap like the sterotype atlanta artist but what im trying to show is that i can be southern and still come with lyrical bars and spread the word that atlanta, Clayton county espicially has alot more artist than flocka, just look at the fellas over at DPF. Salute to all of them.

Yoh:I agree with simba Clayton county has range of talented artist that are on a whole different level than flocka.
@B.Ry you dropped a beat tape recently which I must say was pretty nice. Can you see yourself focusing on producing more than rapping down the line
@Simba similar to the question for B with all the rappers slowly creeping into the producing lane,do you plan on possible learning from your partner in crime and craft your own beat?

B.Ry: Yea there has been 4 to 5 times when i have told my closest friends that i wont continue rapping much longer. To me, rappin is a hobby, just something to do. Making beats on the other hand is the thing i do to enjoy my self, relieve stress, express myself. Two totally different roads for me.
Simba: Yeah i do plan too. hopefully soon b.ry hook me up with the software then i’ll get started i got alot of ideas for beats and song ideas but in the meantime i’ve focusing on my writing trying to better myself as a artist get my flow and delivery together for our upcoming tapes.

Yoh:What can you tell us about these upcoming projects?

Simba,B.RY,GarySamurai

Simba: Our Next official tape entitled “The Movie” will drop at the end of the month. we havent fully decided on a date just yet. We have another tape which is all old music like within the last 5 years old and we are going to just spin over all the beats and b.ry gonna add a tad bit of his funk swag to all of em thats set to drop closer to november. Then our 1st of a series of tribute tapes where we rap over beat of our favorite groups and artist will drop in December. As far as solo work b.ry tape “Thoughts out of my speakerbox” will drop soon. My tape “Green Lights and Red Rings” will drop either December ish or early next year depending on production.

Yoh: Now with all the music you guys plan to put out between now & next year what are some of the goals you hope these projects will help you two accomplish?

B.Ry: honestly For me, I want us to get the point where local MC’s and artist realize we aren’t just another run of the mill group of “closet rappers” I want for people to hit us up and be like “it would be hella dope if yall could rap on my beat or do a track wit me.” That would give me that sense of satisfaction i would be content with
Simba: Just to me known as upcoming artist coming out of Atlanta get people listening and start doing shows

B.RY

Yoh:Not a far-fetch goals. Now alot of rappers leave there hometowns to get recognition ever think about that? Or do you really want to get that hometown love before anywhere else

B.Ry: I aint goin nowhere. cant expand if your dont have a good base first
Simba: I want to expand as a artist but never leave home

Yoh: You both have interest in anime and video games, how does that influence your music?

Simba

B.Ry: Awwwww damn here we go. Im more of the Anime watcher in the duo but i do dabble in video games as well. As far as it’s presence in my music, it rarely comes up for now. Its alot more evident in songs off of my solo tape. But it will come up more and more as time progresses
Simba: I let b.ry do the animes i focus my time on games i pride myself in being a gamer dude. I play everything and it influences everything i do pretty much if you read this add my gamertag: thekid1323 on xbox live!

Yoh:@B.RY~ favorite anime and why?
@Simba~ Favorite game or more recent game that really blew your mind.

B.Ry: Ahhhh tough one. I’d have to say Yu Yu Hakusho cause its what really got me into anime. Dope storyline and concept. It aint ordinary Bruh.
Simba: damn, that kinda of a big question i’d hafta say my top 5 of all time are 5. Zelda Orcarina of time 4. Sonic Adventure 2 battle 3. Conker’s bad fur day 2. Killer instinct 1. River City Ransom. Thats a tough one dog lol dang, i aint thought that hard since…….94′, before the war started. But the game that took my breath away was mass effect series. i must admit i beat 2 before one but i went back and beat both a few of my people died at the end tho but its all G. lol im workin on it in this second playthough

Yoh: Lmao @B.RY YuYu is a classic no doubt & @simba named all the classic especially sonic, people slept on it. We see you both are pursing career in music but what’s the back up plan? Do you have a plan B no pill?

B.Ry: Actually music is my backup plan. I rap for pure enjoyment. My lifelong goal is to finish college majoring in Information Technology, and working for the City Of Atlanta fixing computers for different departments. I already have a foot in the door, for now its all about finishing college.
Simba: music is a dream of mines but I am a college student I attend AIU in sandy springs majoring in criminal justice. My plan was to be a forensic scientist and work in Atlanta but I really didn’t find it as interesting as I had hoped but I’m very close to getting my degree so I decided to stick it out and graduate. I hate school tho. As a sidepoint lol

Yoh:I wish you guys the best of luck with school(I agree with simba tho) haha. Got a few more questions and it’s a wrap guys

1. If you had to pick one song that people can listen via your bandcamp that you feel will make them a fan which one and why?
2. One artist and or producer that you would consider your dream collaboration? DOA
3. Pick one Music,Women,or a Unicorn
4. Current inspirations to keep pushing for this music career?
5. What does success mean to Self-Explanatory?

B.Ry: 1. It would have to be Shinjuku Lights. That the only song to me that shows our full music capabilities. And come on, that song is crack.
2. Dream song: Self Explanatory & Outkast Prod. by LeVi & Curbside Jones (them 2 cats would b ham on a beat)
3. Women. With them i’ll get inspiration to make music to ascend to the level of unicorn status
4. Progression. Its all about hearing how much better we can get over time
5. In the words of Brother Curbside, Success is when you r your girl’s favorite artist

Simba: 1. I agree until the tape drops Shinjuku lights. We’ve put alot more effort, blood, sweat, mild sauce into the newer material so we’re hoping to get the listens and the time it deserves.
2.X to the effin V yo. XV is my favorite artist hands down. Between him and Curbside Jones they showed me i can be me and put out dope music. The message behind the Square in the Circle and how curbside related bumlife to a album it just showed me dudes out here are just like me and rap about things i relate to literally and its DOPE. so yeah i would do 3 songs all produced by Seven one because i want to the second because he wants to and the third because the squarians ask for it.
3. I’m already a unicorn dog i’m a fuckin unicorn (Tyler, the creator voice) LOL I’d pick music. Never lies never does you dirty.
4.My dreams, I’ve always wanted to be a artist of any type and i want to perfect this art craft and im not gonna stop until i do. and i love for people to appriciate me its the syndrome of being a lame kid growing up.
5.Success is what we make it. it could be dropping the movie and performing shows for the rest of our lives. or it could be having a family and a stable household and not doing music B,ry is my music partner but this dude my brother before and after it all.

Yoh:Very dope responses guys. Much success to you both regardless if it’s music or any other careers you two pursue. All I need now fella’s is the your social network info and where people can peep your music. Much love from thetapedeck!
