Yoh: First off I wanna thank you for allowing me the chance to interview you. For readers unfamiliar with your music give us a little back ground on you as a artist?

D.Lain:  I appreciate the interview homie. Im D-Lain, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I say words that rhyme over rhythms and melodies. I just dropped a tape called UGLY, because im freaking UGLY. Like unattractive.

Yoh: Lol well is that what inspired the title, and the artwork cover of you with the bag over your head?

D.Lain:  Yea, the bag is my super-rapper mask. It regenerates. It represents the mask I wear for society. Im still struggling to be myself at all times. Also, my face is too UGLY for the public to see just yet.

Yoh: Kinda reminds me of MF-Doom. So what can you tell us about UGLY and why should people peep the project?

D.Lain:  I never knew what DOOM’s mask stood for, I thought it had something to do with his brother dying or something. He’s one of my favorite rappers though. UGLY is my first solo release, the subject matter is pretty different from what I hear from rappers, and I listen to a lot of rap. I talk about being the leader of the outcast, how television sucks nowadays, porn, and how I hate drugs. People tell me its pretty good, and I dont wanna brag on myself.

Yoh: Well I throughly enjoyed it myself. Even though your subject matter is different yet relatable. One of the stand out tracks to me was intro(vert) produced by Jonathan Lowell. How did that come about?

D.Lain: Some chick I followed on Twitter retweeted something he said about Hip-Hop and I agreed, I don’t remember what it was about, but it was something cool enough for me to follow him. Then I found out he made beats, so I checked his Soundcloud out. I sent him a few I tracks I did and he was impressed. He was kind enough to work with me on the tape, and Intro(Vert) was one of the tracks we decided to use. That along with Euphoria.

Yoh: Any chance we will get a full project from D-Lain & Lowell?

D.Lain: Maynnnnnnnnne, NO! I’ll never work with him again! I hate him, I hate him, I hate eeeeeemmmmM!!!!!! We’re working on an EP together right now.

Yoh: haha, looking forward to that. Now the track 199x is basically tributed the cartoons that many of us 90′s kids grew up on. The toonami generation is what i like to refer us as. Were Saturday morning cartoons/cartoons in general a big impact on you growing up.

D.Lain: Yea man most definitely, I used to watch Toonami religiously. Toonami, Cartoon Cartoon Friday’s, FoxKids, WB Kids, ABC Kids, One Saturday Morning, those are just the first few that came to mind. Most people aspire to be like real successful people, but I just wanna be like Goku. That era will forever be the greatest television of all time.

Yoh: Yo fox kid’s and cartoon cartoon fridays… Haha you really just took me all the way back. You have tracks where you speak on subjects like masturbation(sensei fish food) & pursuing a women not just for sexual intercourse but to better yourself and actually enjoy her company(my attempt @ a girl song) not the normal concept rappers will touch on. Were you iffy about touching upon these subjects?

D.Lain: Most definitely, I had a skit on there that kind of explained that. My engineer was making fun of me not getting any girls and stuff, I told him “If I was insecure about it, then you wouldn’t know”. So, I get rejected by girls a lot but it doesnt bother me anymore, so I just rap about it to help someone who maybe is insecure about it, to let em know they arent the only one. Also, that’s what separates an artist from a regular person, artists have a duty to talk about what most people are afraid to.

Yoh: As much as I agree with that,it’s also something that I can say is lacking in hip-hop. If everyone is talking about living this lavish life or a slum life their is still people that don’t fit in those categorize. If we all talking about tattoos who’s speaking for the naked skin people. Do you prefer to rap about a certain topic/concept or just shows your ability to spit punchlines and metaphors?

D.Lain: Its definitely more fun to just try to come up with dope punchlines, but I feel like all the cool ones have been used already, haha. Im one of the people who don’t fit into any of those categories, so I try to touch on topics that appeal specifically to those who are similar to me. I think songs are more like to have high replay value if they’re about a specific topic.

Yoh: Word. Now I remember hearing on the EP that below the heaven had a huge impact on you rapping can you further elaborate?

D.Lain: Below The Heavens is such an important album. Its one of the most complete albums from this wave of newer rappers, like from 2004 until now. Blu made me wanna pursue rapping because he generated a lot of buzz for himself without using a gimmick. He’s a regular dude with nappy hair and he didnt have a car or a cellphone at one point. He’s someone I’d be friends with. So it was inspiring to a kid like me who thought rap was all about glamour and gangster life before hearing that album.

Yoh:It’s a undeniable classic. Just a few more questions and it’s a wrap.

1. Favorite song off UGLY and why?
2. One artist you’d like to work with that’s not consider old school
3. If rapping doesn’t work out as a profession what’s another long term goal you have?
4. I’ve notice you been hitting open mics alot lately how have the reactions been?
5. All time favorite porn star?
6. What does success mean to D-Lain?

D-Lain: 1. I can’t choose, they’re all my children. 199X is my most beautiful child though, that’s the best i’ve ever recorded so far.
2. I want to work with Bangladesh really bad.
3. I’ll probably be a school teacher when I stop being a rapper.>
4. Great reactions, or none at all. The people at those open mics like to act cute all the time. They’re too bougie to wave their hands in the air, ya know?

5. UGGHHHHH. One??? Priya Rai. Or maybe Ayana Angel. Or Rachel Starr. Nah, Priya Rai.
6. Success is gas going up a whole dollar and me not really giving a damn. I just wanna live comfortably, I dont see the point in having more than one vehicle.

I appreciate the look bro, i’ll definitely have more music coming soon.

Yoh: All we need know is your social network information for people to reach you and looking forward to the new music!

D-Lain: You can download my music at D-Lain.com, tweet me @DLoniusFunk, and im still trying to figure out Tumblr but mine is devrek.tumblr.com
